Choosing a computer technician in Bishkek: 8 things to check

An advertised price tells only part of the story. These eight checks help you choose a technician, understand the terms and know what to test when the work is done.

THE KEY POINTS

  • Ask about the visit, diagnosis and labour costs before booking.
  • Agree separately on work involving your files and on warranty terms.
  • Test the original problem together with the technician.

Bishkek has repair workshops, independent technicians and services that visit your home or office. When a computer suddenly stops working, it is tempting to book the first result you find. Yet the final bill, the work included and the way a job is handled can vary considerably. These questions will help you make a more informed choice.

1. Check that the technician handles your kind of problem

Installing Windows and repairing components on a laptop motherboard require different skills and equipment. Describe the symptom first: the device will not turn on, runs slowly, loses Wi-Fi or cannot find a printer. Ask whether the work can be done at your address. A technician who says that board repair needs a workshop may simply be giving you a realistic assessment; some jobs cannot be done properly in a home.

2. Find out what the price includes

Ask separately about the visit, diagnosis, labour and any parts or materials. Establish what you would pay if you decide against a repair after diagnosis. Agree that extra work must be approved before it starts. An advertised minimum repair price does not tell you the total cost of your particular job.

If you live outside Bishkek, ask about the out-of-town surcharge. Providers define their coverage areas differently. Give the district or settlement before agreeing to a visit.

3. Distinguish an estimate from a diagnosis

A phone conversation can suggest possible causes. It cannot reliably establish the condition of a motherboard, drive or power supply from the words “black screen”. A responsible technician explains the checks needed and does not insist on an expensive replacement without diagnosis. Ask for an explanation you can understand.

4. Ask who provides the service and what paperwork is available

Check the details of the business or sole trader. Before booking, ask what contract you will sign, how equipment handed over for repair is documented and what paperwork you will receive when the work is finished. Registration alone does not prove technical ability; consider it alongside clear terms and good communication.

At IT Services, we sign a contract with private customers and organisations. If equipment is handed over to us for repair, we prepare a handover certificate. Once the work is finished, we issue a completion certificate recording the work, date, warranty terms and period, and amounts paid. Organisations also receive an invoice for payment. Paperwork and warranty terms.

5. Discuss your data before work begins

A laptop may contain photos, messages, saved credentials and work documents. If the device still works, make a backup before changes are made. Ask whether access to personal files will be needed, and do not share banking passwords. Agree separately on reinstalling Windows or formatting a drive. If the computer will not start, make clear when preserving data matters more than completing the repair quickly.

6. Check the warranty terms

Find out what is covered: a fitted part, the work performed or a particular fault. Ask how long the cover lasts and how to report a repeat problem. A service warranty and a part manufacturer’s warranty may be different. Ask for the terms to be explained in advance and recorded in the completion document.

7. Match the type of help to the problem

A home visit is useful for checking Wi-Fi, printers, Windows and the computer in the network where the fault occurs. Board work or soldering may require a properly equipped workshop. If you would rather avoid transporting a desktop, ask what can be diagnosed at your address and what happens if a workshop is needed. Our guide to home visits and workshop repairs compares the two options.

8. Test the result together

Open the application that was freezing, connect to the internet or print a test page. Ask what was changed and what to do if the symptom returns. It is easier to assess the service when you have seen the result yourself.

Five questions to ask before booking

  1. Do you handle this fault, and can you work at my address?
  2. What do the visit and diagnosis cost separately from the repair?
  3. How will we agree on the final price if another problem is found?
  4. What will happen to the files on the drive?
  5. What will we test afterwards, and what warranty terms apply?

Frequently asked questions

Can I get an exact price by phone?

Sometimes, for a clearly defined task. Intermittent faults and hardware problems often need diagnosis before the total can be confirmed. Ask how the price will be calculated.

Do I have to give the technician my Windows password?

Not necessarily. Enter it yourself where possible. Agree in advance on access to files and accounts.

Must I take my laptop to a workshop?

No. Whether a repair can be completed during a visit depends on the fault and the equipment required.

The main point

The best choice is not automatically the cheapest. Look for someone who understands the job, explains the price, handles data carefully and lets you check the result.
