Computer will not turn on: what to check before calling a technician

No power, no picture and a failed Windows startup are different problems. Identify the symptom, check external connections and put your files first.

THE KEY POINTS

  • Distinguish no power, no picture and a Windows startup problem.
  • Start with the socket, external cables and monitor input.
  • Stop trying to power it on if there is a burning smell or liquid damage.

“The computer will not turn on” can describe several different problems. A desktop may not respond at all, the fans may run while the screen stays black, or the manufacturer’s logo may appear before Windows fails to start. The exact symptom determines what to check next.

Step 1. Identify what is happening

No signs of power. There are no lights or fan sounds, and nothing changes on screen. The power source, cable, button or internal components may be involved.

Fans run, but there is no picture. Separate a monitor or cable problem from a fault in the display hardware or other components.

There is a picture, but Windows does not start. The drive, boot settings or operating system may need checking. That is a different diagnostic path. See Windows startup problems for that situation.

Step 2. Check external power

If it is safe, confirm that the socket works using another known working, low-power device. Check that the desktop’s power cable is fully inserted and the extension or surge strip is switched on.

Do not open the power supply or probe internal contacts with metal objects. Some components can retain dangerous voltage after the cable is unplugged. If you notice smoke, a burning smell, crackling or liquid damage, disconnect the power if safe and do not try again.

Step 3. Rule out the monitor

If the fans run, check that the monitor is on and the correct input is selected. Make sure the display cable is secure. After a desktop is moved, it can be plugged into the wrong display connector, particularly if the machine has a separate graphics card.

Do not open the case if you are unsure of the procedure. For an initial enquiry, a photo of the rear panel and a description of the indicator lights are enough.

Step 4. Record messages on screen

Photograph messages such as No boot device, Automatic Repair or a BIOS/UEFI notification. Do not immediately reinstall Windows: important files may still be on the drive. A startup error does not always mean the drive has failed, but repeated unsuccessful recovery attempts are not a useful substitute for diagnosis.

Avoid random internal changes

Do not open the power supply, bridge motherboard contacts, change BIOS settings from an unrelated tutorial or format the drive as a quick fix. Stop trying to run a computer that sparks, overheats or switches off with unusual noises. Experiments can make an existing fault worse.

What to tell the technician

Say whether it is a desktop or an all-in-one, what happens after pressing the button, whether there is sound or a picture, and whether there was a power outage. Mention recent changes to the drive or graphics card and whether the machine was moved.

For a visit in Bishkek, give the district and useful directions through a private contact channel, rather than posting personal address details in public comments. For a nearby settlement, confirm the travel arrangements first.

When hardware diagnosis is needed

If external checks do not help, diagnosis proceeds through power, display, memory, storage and other components. These checks require appropriate skills and tools. Nobody can reliably promise a five-minute repair from the symptom alone.

Put your files first

Tell the technician if work documents or family photos are a priority. Do not agree to a reinstall or replacement drive without discussing the files. If a hard disk shows signs of mechanical failure, stop improvised recovery attempts. The guide to home visits and workshop repairs can help you discuss the right setting for further checks.

Frequently asked questions

The computer stopped turning on after a power outage. What should I do?

Start with external power and the surge strip. If there is a burning smell or visible damage, do not turn it on again. Internal faults need diagnosis.

The fans run, but the screen is black. Is it the graphics card?

Not necessarily. Monitor, cable, memory and other faults can produce similar symptoms.

Should I reinstall Windows straight away?

No. Reinstalling cannot restore missing electrical power, and an unprepared reinstall can put files at risk.

The main point

Before booking help, aim to describe the symptom accurately and rule out obvious external causes. Internal repairs should follow a proper diagnosis, with both the equipment and the person using it kept safe.
